As a concluding post of this series, we would like to introduce SimFWD, one of the leading Ship Design offices in Greece. SimFWD is renowned for their expertise with advanced engineering tools like FEA & CFD. Having several years of experience with these tools, SimFWD shall contribute with their expertise in tasks concerning the Hydrodynamic Optimization of the case study vessels.

SimFWD is an Engineering, Development & Application Company providing customers with integrated design and engineering services in Maritime / Offshore and Shipbuilding projects, with vessels of different types and size. Our range of services starts from the concept idea until the ship is put in service and continues through life-cycle services as maintenance, repair and conversion. We have the ability to address all steps of the design and engineering process with high quality. Our background in Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE), Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in the Maritime industry has encouraged the development and application of simulation methods to solve the most demanding engineering problems.

In the RETROFIT55 project, SimFWD shall take the lead on tasks concerning Hydrodynamic Optimization of the case study vessels. Retrofitting solutions like WASP & ALS shall be assessed for improving the ship’s hydrodynamic design. Emphasis will be placed on the interaction between hydrodynamic design and other energy saving measures adopted, in order to realistically assess the cumulative effect and optimize the ship’s design in a holistic way.

Emphasis shall also be laid on optimizing for realistic operational profile (speed, displacement, wind and sea conditions), based on available operational data. The numerical tools to be exploited range from higher fidelity CFD to potential flow solvers as well as reduced order engineering models. Utilization of different tools of varying fidelity will allow for a more holistic approach while at the same time providing an additional level of confidence regarding the key findings.

SimFWD shall also coordinate exploitation, dissemination, and marketing activities towards ensuring and maximizing the visibility and sustainability of the project outcomes and its commercial continuation after project closure.
